Listen to the Rhythm of Nature
Have you noticed the birds singing louder these past few days? It’s as if they’ve finally shaken off their winter slumber in anticipation of spring. Their chatter fills the trees around me, a beautiful melody cutting through the gloomy, lingering winter days.
It’s February, and the snowdrops are finally out - brave, white bells pushing through the cold crust of the earth. Their appearance is the first sign that the world is slowly awakening. Even though the landscape still looks as if it’s hibernating, there is a restless stirring deep underground. Something is slowly transforming in the dark; a quiet, hidden energy is gathering its strength, proving that life is already moving long before we see it bloom.
As I notice these delicate changes, the noise of my own negative thoughts begins to fade. Witnessing these quiet shifts transfers my focus to the rhythm of nature and its own perfect timing. There is no rush here - no timelines, no goals, and certainly no judgment.
Every step outside reveals a new surprise at its own pace. All I have to do is notice, listen to the melodies around me, and breathe in the coolness of the fresh air. In this stillness, I am slowly discovering just how much magic lives within the ordinary.
Whenever my mind starts to wander, I gently bring it back to these surprises hidden in plain sight. I watch a single bird claiming its branch in song; I find the first yellow petals huddled around the base of a tree and the soft pink buds beginning to swell on a nearby shrub. Even the sun seems to be playing, darting in and out from behind the shifting clouds.
By the time I turn back toward home, I am amazed at how much lighter I feel. The heavy, negative thoughts have been replaced by a different kind of energy - a quiet sense of renewal. My mind feels refreshed, as if the winter fog has finally lifted. Now, my creativity feels ready to spill out onto the page, eager to catch whatever magic is ready to emerge.
Back at my desk, I reach for my improvised art journal, crafted from recycled magazines and old books. I add layers of paint, paste down collage scraps, and play with random marks. Eventually, the pages transform into a completely new story - a meaningful memory of the day. As the bird sang out to me from the tree, 'listen to the rhythm of nature,' I finally did. I listened with my heart.
My Learnings: When you embrace the rhythm of nature, you begin to trust that even when things are hard, beauty can still be found. I invite you to take a moment today to simply notice the tiny changes around you. Every day brings something new to experience, one step at a time.
Go outside and listen to the rhythm of this season. I wonder who - or what - you will hear...
